SPEED YOU UP
WSX Future Skills Bordon

The Centre is based in Bordon, Alton, Hampshire and provides a training space to a large number of Construction learners. SYU has been delivered here by SYU Coordinator and trainer Adriana Crear for 2 groups of learners since November 2021.

The students had an opportunity to learn about the idea of self-employment, and skills needed in self-employment as well as the ways of generating a business idea over 6 hourly sessions.

The two groups of talented painters-decorators, carpenters and construction students are now in a practical phase of SYU where they are preparing their prototypes and are getting ready for a Business Pop Up Event in January 2022.

The Centre is very much community orientated and during their SYU training, the learners were taking part in many community initiatives.

One of them being a renovation of a local Youth Hub and one building wooden, beautifully crafted benches very much needed in the Centre.

2nd February

The Business Pop Up event took place on 2nd February.

In total, the learners created seven businesses ( Pop Ups) which were displayed during the Business Pop Up event.

One of the Pop-Up businesses has been already registered as a sole trader company and has got regular customers.

The event was attended by a colleague from Hampshire Council – Carolyn Jay as well as by business mentors from Inspiring Enterprise Project Lizzie Raffles and Susan Reviere who joined us via Teams.

There are also 3 companies which are involved in the Pop up: two construction companies T.A.T.A. Property Maintenance and Frogski & Marcin who offered the learners working experience as well as road recovery company Rhino Recovery LTD which is based in the Aldershot Enterprise Centre and became the Speed You Up ambassador and a role model for the learners.

19th April: WSX Camberley Hub Simon Rai Art Pop Up

On Tuesday 19th April one of Speed You Up learners Simon Rai was presenting his works of art during a business Pop Up event at the Camberley’s SYU Hub – the Workshop.

Simon who attended a full Speed You Up course was inspired to set up his own business and start selling his art pieces.

During the Pop-Up, amongst others, we had a visit from an Inspirational guest Mayor of Surrey Heath Sarah Jane Croke who guided and coached Simon in relation to his future business plans.

At the event also present were Matthew Fox from Surrey County Council and Clare Parrack who is an SYU coach and stakeholder.

Simon who uses a variety of media when creating his work ( painting,  drawings and collages) said:

Speed you up was a helpful workshop run by very friendly and encouraging coaches. I was given the knowledge and confidence to step out of my comfort zone and organise a pop up booth to promote my art business. It’s shown me that really anyone can start a business as long as they are willing to ask for help and put themselves out there. We need more programmes like this to help foster the talents and ideas of the youth.”
